Beginner’s Comprehensive Guide to Playing Roulette

Roulette tricks and basics for first-time players

Whether if you’re new to casinos or just to table games, this guide is perfect for anyone who’s just starting out with roulette. Among all the casino games, although not as popular as slots, roulette is considered one of the more popular table games, and it’s mainly due to the game’s appearance.

Unlike other table games, where the main thing being dealt are either dices or cards, roulette has a giant wheel and board all to itself. Its shiny roulette wheel and crowd of people huddled around the table is indeed an eye-catching view from afar, which makes it all the more special.

The roulette wheel goes a long way back in history. It’s not surprising that the game is receiving a lot of attention in casinos now, so if you’ve always been wondering about the game or just wanting to try out the game, read on for some roulette tricks and advice for beginners.

Spinning Roulette Wheel

The Basics

The main goal in roulette is to accurately guess where the ball will land on the roulette wheel. The croupier, or better-known as the dealer in other table games, will spin the roulette wheel after everyone has placed their bets. It’s a rather simple game to grasp, but the tricky part is when players place their bets, but we’ll get to that in a second.

Depending on the roulette variant, there can be a total of 37 to 38 numbers on the roulette wheel, labelled with either red or black. The number zero however, will be in green, to distinguish it from the remaining numbers.

Make sure you have a sufficient amount of money before you begin your game. At a landed casino, you’ll be provided with chips of the same color most of the time, which will be unique to you to avoid getting mixed up when other players start placing their bets too. At an online casino however, you won’t have to worry about all that as the computer will do the job for you.

Betting

If you look at the roulette wheel carefully, you’ll notice that the wheel has two layers – the outer layer with numbers on it, and the inner layer with only the two main colors. That’s what we call the inside and outside bets. Similarly, on the board, you’ll find that some numbers are colored, while others remain green. The colored ones are the inside bet, while the green ones are the outside bet.

To start placing your bets, you’ll have to look at the board instead of the wheel. The board contains all the relevant information from the roulette wheel including numbers and colors. Players will be required to place their chips on the board according to the categories they’re betting on.

Players can choose to bet on the individual numbers, colors, odd or even, and even the range of numbers. Betting on more than one category is allowed, but take note that there’s no guarantee that you’ll win something back.

Roulette Table

Variations

Due to its long history, players have managed to preserve several roulette variants over time. The three main variants are American, European, and French. At first glance, these variants, despite having similar appearances, are slightly different from one another.

For European and French roulette, other than having different languages on the board, both variants uses the single zero roulette wheel. The American variant on the other hand, uses a double zero roulette wheel. Other than that, all three variants have 36 numbers excluding the zero(s), so players can play with whichever variants they want without worrying about the rules being too different.

If you’re playing roulette in online casinos, you might notice that there are several more roulette variants to choose from. Depending on the casino you’re playing at, the number of roulette variants

available are endless. It’ll take you a while to fully discover what roulette can offer, so don’t worry about getting bored with the game too quickly.

Roulette Variants

Odds and Payout

You may have heard of the saying ‘the house always wins’, that’s the case with roulette and all the other games in the casino. It’s not unusual to see players walking out with less money than what they had begun with. However, it’s not entirely impossible for players to win. First, we’ll have to look at the odds and payouts of roulette.

Depending on the roulette variant, the payout rates can differ. In this case, American roulette has an RTP (return to player) rate of around 94.74%. RTP is the percentage of wagered money that will be returned to players over thousands or millions of gameplays.

Compared to the European variant, which has an RTP rate of 97.3%, the American roulette provides players with a lower chance of winning. This is because American roulette has an extra zero within the roulette wheel, and that adds to the house edge.

House edge is the advantage the casino has over all players. To put it in simpler terms, it’s the complete opposite of RTP rate. For instance, if a European roulette variant has an RTP rate of 97.3%, the house edge would be 2.7%.

If we were to compare roulette with any other games in the casino, we’d say roulettes are worth your time. Unlike the widely-adored slot machines, which has an RTP rate of anywhere from 85% to 99% depending on the game, roulette has a relatively stable RTP, if players know how to make use of the odds.

Strategies

Which brings us to the final, yet most important point. Some players prefer to get right into the game without any sort of roulette tricks or strategy, but it’s been proven that strategies do help players stand a better chance at winning.

The Martingale strategy is one of the oldest and most popular strategy across the globe. The main goal of this strategy is to recover your losses by doubling your bets every time you lose a bet. This way, players can recover eventually regardless of how many times they lose.

To make full use of the Martingale strategy, players need to first, look for a table with a low minimum bet and high maximum bet. Place a minimum bet on anywhere you’d like and stick with it. If you win, remain the same amount of bet, but if you lose, double your bets.

There’s also the reverse Martingale strategy. This strategy capitalizes on winning streaks rather than losing streaks. The idea is to increase your bets when you win, and decrease them after losing.

The bad thing about this strategy is that it thins out your bankroll faster than any other strategy, so don’t attempt this strategy if you think you have bad luck, or you’re just not confident about the game. If you’re using the Martingale strategy and you begin your losing streak, it’ll be difficult for you to recover, unless of course, you know you’re going to win the next round. The opposite applies to the reverse Martingale strategy.

However, if you’re not up for such a risky strategy yet, you can also try out the D’Alembert strategy. Instead of doubling your bets, you increase your bets by one when you lose, and decrease it by one when you win.

Another famous strategy is the Fibonacci strategy. Developed by a famed Italian mathematician, Fibonacci, this is considered one of the safer strategy among others. If you’re still skeptical about the general idea of incorporating a strategy into your gameplay, it’s best that you test the waters with this strategy.

To begin, start by adding your previous two bets together and betting that amount in the following rounds. This strategy is made so that you won’t leave without a profit even when you’ve lost more rounds than that you’ve won.

Players should make sure that they’ve understood the basics of the game before beginning so that they’ll get the best results out of these strategies. Responsible gambling also plays a huge role in this regard, to ensure players don’t overspend their budget and the decisions made in the casino don’t affect players’ day-to-day life.

Experiment with some of these strategies and see which one suits you the best before settling down. If none of these strategies are suitable, stay tuned to our blog as we introduce more strategies in our future articles.
